Minions & Monsters | $172,852,045

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Universal Pictures and Illumination have delivered another animated powerhouse with the release of Minions & Monsters. Premiering globally at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival before hitting theaters in the United States on July 1, 2026, the 90-minute animated period comedy marks the third entry in the Minions prequel series and the seventh overall film in the record-breaking Despicable Me franchise.
Premise & Narrative Arc
Set prior to the events of Minions (2015), the story introduces a brand-new tribe of yellow henchmen—led by duo James and Henry—wandering through the 1920s. After crashing a silent film set in Old Hollywood, their accidental cameo turns them into overnight motion-picture stars. However, as Hollywood transitions into the era of “talkies,” the Minions’ incomprehensible gibberish (“Minionese”) lands them out of work.
Determined to remain in cinema, James and Henry break away from the tribe to direct their own low-budget monster movie. Using an ancient spellbook from a former villainous employer, they inadvertently unleash a menagerie of real Lovecraftian kaiju and sea monsters onto Southern California. The Minions must unite to save Hollywood from the chaos they created.

- Critical Sentiment: Reviewers applauded the silent-comedy slapstick homage to figures like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, alongside the addition of classic monster-movie creature features.
Creative Vision & Production Context
Producer Chris Meledandri revealed that the central concept originated from exploring what would happen if the Minions tried to harness real monsters under the guise of movie magic.
Speaking on returning to direct the characters he created and voices, Pierre Coffin noted:
“Placing the Minions in the transition from silent film to talkies allowed us to play with visual humor in its purest form. They are natural physical comedians, and pitting their innocence against gigantic Lovecraftian creatures gave us endless comedic fuel.”
